The Friends of Beacon food Forest is having a PLANTING PARTY to put our bare root babies into pots on: Sunday May 6, 2012 on Beacon Hill. 1:30-4:30pm This week we are receiving a large order of edible tree and shrub plants in the form of a ‘bare root,’ and they need to be potted for the season and await their planting into the Beacon Food Forest in the fall. Come join us. We will share updates and stories as we plant. We will provide instruction on how. Bring gloves and we will all get to work on putting these bare root babies in soil. We need: large plastic plant pots: 4 gal – 20 gallons in size. – Do you have any or know where we can get some? Friends of beacon Food Forest Beacon Food Forest Site Visit Saturday June 2nd. 11am to 4pm Location: Southwest corner of Jefferson Park, approximately 15th Ave S and Dakota St. Beacon Hill. The Beacon Food Forest Steering Committee is holding a Public Tour of the Beacon Food Forest site.Members of the Steering Committee will be on site to explain the design and how it fits in with the land. We will also answer questions about P-Patch availability, plants we will grow and how to get involved in the food forest. Free Pruning Workshop. Do you want to learn how to prune fruit trees? Do you have an old fruit tree -- one that came with your house or apartment or do you just want to learn how to prune an old plum tree on site? On Sunday, April 29 10am to 12 noon, Rita Smith, who grew up on a Central Washington fruit orchard and has a passion for fruit tree pruning, will demonstrate how to renovate an elderly plum tree on Beacon Hill. The demo/workshop will cover plum pruning basics and renovation of old fruit trees. The class is sponsored by City Fruit, the Beacon Food Forest Steering Committee, and Rainier Valley Eats! RSVP to glennherlihy@speakeasy.net . This workshop is being offered for free to encourage our neighbors to gain fruit tree knowledge and skills. These skills will enable us to take better care of the mature trees we have in the neighborhood, encourage higher yields and help them to live longer healthier lives. Thank you. Outreach Meeting 3/26 at 6pm Beacon Merchant's Space in BH Library (2821 Beacon Ave. S.) Come meet our new outreach service providers who will be connecting with the Hispanic, Vietnamese, Somali and Chinese communities to spread the good word about the Beacon Food Forest. We'll also be discussing staffing at some upcoming events and responding to requests that continue to come in via e-mail. We need volunteers to work these events. 7:00 pm, Thursday March 22 at the Garden House on Beacon Hill, 2336 15th Ave. S. Seattle, WA 98144 (at S. College Street) Open to all! Come hear an overview and update of the project, with a teach-in on some aspects of Permaculture. Meet the SteerCo (Steering Committee) and each other. Here is the agenda 1) Welcome/Mingle 2) BFF History a) A brief discussion of the work that has been done so far to make the BFF a reality in our neighborhood 3) BFF Status – a) An update on where the project is today and what the Steering Committee is working on 4) Teaching a) We’ll talk a little bit about permaculture, what a food forest is, how these things relate to the BFF, and why we’re doing the things we’re doing. 5) Appeal for Outreach Coordinator/Call for event staff a) We need your help. There are several event coming up and we will need some volunteers to staff them 6) Skills Assessment a) We’ve had a lot of interest in volunteering, so we’ve decided to build a “skills bank.” Tell us how you would like to participate with the BFF. If we know what you’re abilities and interests are, we’ll know when to get in touch. – Don’t worry, if you have an interest in something but no experience, that’s ok….community learning/teaching is a big part of what we’re doing. 7) Wrap-up/Raffle/Social Time a) We’ll finish the meeting up with a raffle for a fabulous prize and an opportunity to be neighborly We are excited about this project and think that a blog would be a good opportunity to share our recent developments with the community.
